Interview with Mike Farrell (07/31/2008)

I recently called Beth Grossman, a publicist we have worked with before, asking her if she had any new and exciting guests for us to interview. She said, “I certainly do, and your timing is perfect.” She told me she had Mike Farrell and as a special bonus Dr. Dan Siegel M.D. Well realizing I knew who Mike Ferrell was as an actor (from M*A*S*H”) and an activist, I was very excited. My mind was flirting with all kinds of questions for the interview as Beth and I were talking; but Beth derailed my train of thought in midstream. She told me the two potential guests will want to talk about John O’Donohue, an Irish poet and philosopher and an author of several books, who had just pasted away in January of this year.

John was a Catholic Priest for 19 years, but in the 1980’s he went to Germany to study the philosophy of Hegel. He eventually left the priesthood and devoted himself full-time to meditating and writing on beauty, friendship, and how the material and the spiritual-the visible and invisible- (Celtic wisdom) intertwined with the human experience. John O’Donohue traveled to United States often to lecture and conduct workshops.

I plan to ask how Mike and Dan met John (maybe through a lecture or workshop) and how they use John’s teachings in their own lives. Dr. Seigel is the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute, an educational organization that focuses on how the development of insight, compassion and empathy in individuals, families and communities can be enhanced by examining the interface of human relationships and basic biological processes.

Did compassion for our fellow human beings bring these three men together?

Tazz and I will find out in this coming Thursday’s interview.
