Interview with Umi (09/25/2008)

Umi has lived a very adventurous life before becoming a Zen master in a growing Zen community outside of Santa Cruz at a mountain top retreat of Stillpoint. He operated a small farm, became a writer, poet, a scuba diver a pilot and a world traveler. He lived a life of pursuing every religion, fame, material and sensual extremes as well as poverty. One day someone handed him a book on Zen; after reading the book, he knew this was what he was looking for and it would stop his ceaseless searching. This led him to the Mount Baldy Zen center, then to India. He found what he had been searching for all his life-total freedom, an experience called Enlightenment.

Tazz and I will be asking Umi about this experience called Enlightenment. Can everyone accomplish this? What would it be like if everyone in the world gave up their ego and ceased being concerned about things?

We’ll also be talking about his newest book “The Diamond Sutra.”
